Oquawka, Ill., Apl. 6/86.

Prof. Bessey.

Dear Sir: I do not remember that you owe me for anything. You paid for the genus and Herb. labels before leaving Iowa, and Mr. Holway paid for the extra labels for the Fungi, recently printed. You can settle with him for those.

Yours, H. W. Patterson.

I am receiving a good many orders for the new Herbarium List, and have concluded to print it.

San Francisco Free Public Library.

Apr. 25 1886

Prof. C. E. Bessey:

Sir: This is to ask you, if you should at any time put forth any scientific pamphlet or reprinted article, to send a copy of it to me for the State Library, or to that Library direct (at 107 Battery St.)

Mr. Sutro is now filling the scientific departments of this intended great Public Libaray (already numbering some 50,000 volumes), which will be unrivalled on this coast for the literary part of scientific research; and he has asked me to assist him in the necessary correspondence.

I trust that the well known importance of publications of the class referred to, and the pecuiar difficulty of obtaining them, will be a sufficient apology for this application.

Very Respectfully Yours Obt Servant J. B. Perkins.

West Chester. March 1st, 1886

My dear Prof. Bessey

I have been confined to my bed for two weeks with an attack of [?], and it will probably be two weeks more before I can get to the University where I shall see your [review?]. When I do, I shall read it with interest. I infer we must have measured friend Coulter correctly, as there was no collusion between us.

Yours truly J. T. Rothrock

West Chester. March 12. 1886

Professo Charles E Bessey My dear Sir.

I have received the botanical portion of the American Naturalist, for which I thank you – The similarity between our reviews of Coulter's Book is very remarkable and compels one to conclude that we must have done about the fair thing for friend Coulter.

I am still in bed – better but helpless as a baby. This is my fourth week. It is a pity they could not have delayed the birth of [Dodal?]—[Post?/Port?] about 30 years, then you could have had [Cuscuta?] to yourself.

Very truly your friend J. T. Rothrock
