Mr. Chas. E. Bessey,
Dear Sir,
The Rev. Mr. Licle of Gordon informed me that you are willing to identify plants for those who are studying them. I am a missionary of the Episcopal Church in this place & vicinity, & am very much interested in Botany, but have never gone into the details. I am now for the first time trying to identify & collect the [praeses] & plants of this region, and shall be grateful for your assistance. They have offered at Washington to do anything for me. "Coulter", which is very defective and the 8 Bulletins of Agricultural Dept., also State Report, 1887. By the aid of all these I think I have made some hits but several mistakes. The "Buffalo" is, abundant here & cannot be mistaken. I have alist of these Nos. & will ask you to correct my mistakes. The varieties of [word] I cannot identify. The yellow is from Rushville -does not grow here. The [Juniper] is abundant at Gordon the white here. No. 17 has puzzled me along time. The varieties [word] are many in outward appearance. but not enough for me to identify more than the "blue" & "black". I am informed that the Express costs nothing. If I am mistaken, please inform me &oblige.
Yours very truly,
J. M. Bates
