the secretaryship? They may elect a new man in which event all matters can be turned over to him. I am willing to do the work one more year if it is so desired.

I have been so busy with college work that the Colorado plants are shelved. I have ordered the Ellis col. of Fungi 17 cents. and if the College cannot afford to own it I will. Only two sets (now one) left. I shall supply Ellis with the Peronospora Gram[?] for his [?] [century?]. If we had enough of the A[?] [?] C[?] it would have been good for Ellis.

I have found a [Synchrytium?] ([?] [?] [guns?]) on [?] [?] which I hope to work up somewhat. That host is not given I believe.

Dont you want to go up to the spring for a swig?! Where's the bottle?

With kind regards to Mrs Bessey and Mrs [Athern?] from us all I am Yours very truly Byron D Halsted

Iowa Agricultural College, Ames.

Department of Botany. Aug 13th 1886.

My dear Dr. Bessey:—

And now you cannot go to Buffalo. I am sorry. You have an answer to your request before this for I had written you that I could not attend and asked you to look out for my interests. It would have been a keen pleasure to gather items for the Am. Nat. for you. (And right here while I think of it let me say I cannot find your article on [Portulaca?] stamens. There is no full set of the Am. Nat. on the grounds. I am anxious to know if I have added anything to the knowledge of the subject. Would the publishers send me that particular number?) Of late I have sent all my spare time getting matters together for [?] [?] for the S. P. A. S. Farlow's paper is to be on [Exoasci?]. I am anxious to know what he has found. It is doubtful if he gets there in time

as his father is quite sick. I have found and done nothing fungological for a week and today Saturday must get up a lecture skeleton for my Applied Botany for the Agr'l Juniors.

Last evening the Faculty was [entertained?] at Dr. [Fairchild's?]. We had valuable guests and did not go. The new President is greatly liked by all. We are having constant [?] committee [?] on courses of study and I will be glad when the task of changing things closes.

Mrs. Halsted remarked today that she must write to Mrs. Athern but she said she did not know how long she could [sic.] retain [her?] [?] [?]. She does not know that I am writing you. I hope you have found some new things in the Colorado "grabs."

If you went into Southern California when you were in the Golden State please report on the winters there. This Mrs Bessey will think is significant. Perhaps it is but she knows how awful it is to remain here during the vacation.

I have looked into the Lobelia pollen [?] question and will send you a note with this if not interrupted before the mail closes! With kind regards to Mrs Bessey Mrs Athern and the boys

I am yours very sincerely Byron D Halsted.

treat you to a jug of [Iowa?] spring water this month but the jug the water and the [?] are so [?] separated that you must [?] wait. I am sorry that you did not get to Buffalo. We could go further and [far?] worse.
