matter to you. Requests for my "Studies" began to come in soon after the issuing of Pittonia. i. Now, I am [come?] to this that I can no longer supply even the "Studies" complete. I have wrapped up for you the Bulletin containing No. i. of the "Studies", also a separate copy of No. vi. which [?]. I suspect I sent you once before: at least, I ought to have sent it, when it was new.

Your brief word of notice of Pittonia 2. pleases me more than anything which has yet been said of that series. You dare to commend "originality"! Don't you know that conventionality is what saves people, and originality, what ruins them now-a-days?

Yours Very Truly, E. L. Greene.

The University of Minnesota Minneapolis, Minnesota

Jan'y 29th 1887.

My dear Professor,

Can you name the right person to come here and teach botany for me next spring term of 11 (or 12) weeks? Our work is so much that we shall be obliged to have help; perhaps you can help us – to the extent of naming a teacher.

Our work in botany years ago for reasons then reasonable was relegated to this spring term: two classes preparatory & freshman have that Study. The [Prof'y?] Class (Scientific Course) has already taken 2/5 of the term's work by alternation with the Chemistry of the full term so they will have 3/5 of a full terms work; but there will be two sections on acct of numbers (There were between 40 & 50 of them). The freshman class all have botany a full terms work but they number 95 — 3 sections at least if our facilities will allow & we shall try to make them do so. There will ge practically 5 classes.

Besides I have a course of lectures to the Seniors in Applied Geology and, unless it be abandoned this year, a course of lectures & laboratory in Mineralogy to the Juniors.

I am now intending to abandon this last named work and throw my strength into the work in botany.

I have not forgotten my hopes dear Professor touching botany in this University; nor have I abandoned them. I feel that time, successful legislation, the growth of the institution and a growing appreciation of the work on the part of some of the regents will bring about some measure of good beyond what has thus far been [?] out to us. Poverty & lack of facilities have thus far discouraged our board; but when they see the work requires another worker I think the question between a good man and a growing man (you understand how that term is used) with a strong element of uncertainty surrounding him will be sttled in the right way.

Sincerely Yours C. W. Hall

Agricultural College. Ames, Iowa.

Department of Botany, June 14th 1887

My dear Dr. Bessey.

Please accept my many thanks for your kind invitation to accompany you to the bad lands. There is nothing that I would enjoy more than to go off on a botanical trip with you. But as I have pledged my sister that I would visit her during the coming vacation it does not seem right to leave family and kim at this time.

I however look forward with much pleasure to the time when we shall meet. It is our intention to leave here on Thursday June 23; remain over right of Omaha. Do some shipping and get to Lincoln in the early evening think about 8 o'clock. We will than

move on for Manhattan about three P.M. next day.

Everything here is in a quiet state as far as I know. I pay little attention to the "winds" but should probably know if a cyclone were near.

It will be a source of much regret that Mrs [Athern?] will be away. We all like her so very much. It is hoped she can visit us in the new [?]. In fact this wish applies to you all. The boys would like to see the old place again and note the changes.

I hope you have had a most enjoyable and successful year. The dry weather here has made rather dry picking for the students with collections to prepare.

With kind regards to you all I am Yours very Truly Byron D Halsted
