WILD WEST

FAIR MAIDENS FROM MANY TRIBES

the hard-working squaw are as much to her as are the caprices of fashion to the society leader; and in illustrating the various types, tribes and customs of both sides of the earth, women of these races play an important and essential part in our grand and inspiring panorama of civilization.

These feminine representatives of their tribes and races display their skill as equestriennes, illustrate the share they have in camp life and are seen in various examples of agility and expertness in necromancy.

No matter what may be one's opinion of the Indian warrior, no matter what his barbaric instincts and warlike disposition may have aroused of resentment and bitterness in the hearts of his white brother, no one can read the beautiful poem of "Hiawatha," in which Longfellow immortalized the Indian woman, without at least partially exempting her from the sweeping denunciations which may be hurled at the head of "the noble redman." There have been love stories and heroines of fact and fiction countless in numbers, but no more impelling romance, no deeper "heart interest" and no more fantastic legend has ever been recorded than the sad, sweet story of Longfellow's Indian maid. The women of the Wild West and Great Far East comprise representatives of many nations; but little "Arrow Head" is the belle of the lot. The buxom and swarthy senorita from Mexico, the carefree and healthy queens of the Western prairies, and the olive-skinned representatives of Oriental beauty, are here assembled in a congress of feminine loveliness; each one idol of some manly heart, each one a beauty in somebody's eyes. In an exhibition so comprehensive and world wide as the Great Far East and Wild West, womankind holds her own important part. The domestic cares of

BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST

ACTUAL MILITARY SERVICE

A MILITARY TOURNAMENT Open to the World

An impetus was given, even governmental authorities and society, in the line of horsemanship when Col. Cody's exhibition made its advent quite a third of a century ago. Hi adding to his primitive horsemen the Roughriders the benefit of drafting his recruits from more than one country, and for years following the great World's Fair at Chicago, a combination of military elements was presented such as was never seen in any other arena, and it has been officially suggested that the United States Government could well afford to subsidize the Wild West and perpetuate its school of usefulness in scientific horsemanship and military perfection.

The necessity of military preparation and the carrying out of General Washington's injunction - "In Time of Peace Prepare for War" - is fully recognized, at the same time the modern, more close alliance of all mankind [?] injected a strong desire for Universal Peace.

This season, to foster and encourage by an effective, animated tableau, a Peace Congress of military representative will be a feature. A battalion of men, native representatives and veterans from different armies of the world, including Red Cross Nuses, who are now becoming essential adjuncts in Humanewarfare, will maneuver in a friendly contest in rhythmic evolutions with cavalry mounts and artillery

THE GRAND MILITARY TOURNAMENT

and Military of the World twenty years ago created still further interest in that line, and in all countries military tournaments, with actual government supervision, have become quite the vogue, attracting unusual attention.

In our own country it has gone to the extent that the government has given grand military tournaments in several localities. This feature of familiarizing the untraveled public with army work and exercises has been enlarged until as many as five thousand men from every branch of the service have participated. Col. Cody's being a private enterprise, has had field practice. The scene will be predominated by the white flag of arbitration, supporting the white dove of peace in a mingling melange of standard bearers of the Flags of All Nations. This will be an interesting exhibition of graceful horsemanship, friendly comingling and spirit of amity among the many different races and nations that the Old Scout in his career was the first to bring together - a melodious fantasia in equine movement, rendering the martial subservient to the charms that soothes man's belligerent spirt - an appropriate sentiment to arouse on the old frontiersman's farewell.

Something New in Horsemanship

We have also secured the Ray Thompson and Rhoda Royal troupes of manage horses, trained ridden and tooled by real Western girls and Frenchman, the whole forming the most finished and remarkable class of equestrianism the public has ever seen. Mr. Thompson's favorite saddle horse which he introduces in this art is a Texas-bred animal named in honor of Senator "Joe" Bailey of the Lone Star State. This horse not only executes all gaits known to the equestrian world but has been trained to perform a number of entirely new tricks and movements under the saddle, the most marvelous being what is known as the "three-legged canter," in which action he carries one forward foot high in the air gallops up and down the arena without touching the upraised foot to the ground, yet at the slightest signal from the rider he reverses his gait from one foot to the other. He also does the cakewalk backwards, introducing a number of eccentric steps and movements and finishes with the "hoochee koochee" dance.

This great group of thoroughbred horses will not only aid to cover all the skill exhibited in the ridings schools of the world, including every gait from walk, trot, lope, pace, gallop, run, single-step and canter, associated with the highest breeding studs of the older nations, and notably our own blue grass region of Kentucky, but will also execute every known trick, pose, dance and haute-ecole known to the arena, besides newly devised intricacies of action, groupings and ballets invented by their national renowned trainers.
