BUFFALO BILL'S WILD WEST
ACTUAL MILITARY SERVICE
A MILITARY TOURNAMENT Open to the World
An impetus was given, even governmental authorities and society, in the line of horsemanship when Col. Cody's exhibition made its advent quite a third of a century ago. Hi adding to his primitive horsemen the Roughriders the benefit of drafting his recruits from more than one country, and for years following the great World's Fair at Chicago, a combination of military elements was presented such as was never seen in any other arena, and it has been officially suggested that the United States Government could well afford to subsidize the Wild West and perpetuate its school of usefulness in scientific horsemanship and military perfection.
The necessity of military preparation and the carrying out of General Washington's injunction - "In Time of Peace Prepare for War" - is fully recognized, at the same time the modern, more close alliance of all mankind [?] injected a strong desire for Universal Peace.
This season, to foster and encourage by an effective, animated tableau, a Peace Congress of military representative will be a feature. A battalion of men, native representatives and veterans from different armies of the world, including Red Cross Nuses, who are now becoming essential adjuncts in Humanewarfare, will maneuver in a friendly contest in rhythmic evolutions with cavalry mounts and artillery
THE GRAND MILITARY TOURNAMENT
and Military of the World twenty years ago created still further interest in that line, and in all countries military tournaments, with actual government supervision, have become quite the vogue, attracting unusual attention.
In our own country it has gone to the extent that the government has given grand military tournaments in several localities. This feature of familiarizing the untraveled public with army work and exercises has been enlarged until as many as five thousand men from every branch of the service have participated. Col. Cody's being a private enterprise, has had field practice. The scene will be predominated by the white flag of arbitration, supporting the white dove of peace in a mingling melange of standard bearers of the Flags of All Nations. This will be an interesting exhibition of graceful horsemanship, friendly comingling and spirit of amity among the many different races and nations that the Old Scout in his career was the first to bring together - a melodious fantasia in equine movement, rendering the martial subservient to the charms that soothes man's belligerent spirt - an appropriate sentiment to arouse on the old frontiersman's farewell.
