Kansas State Agricultural College. Geo. T Fairchild, President. Manhattan, Kansas, Oct. 7th, '91

Prof. C. E. Bessey, Lincoln, Nebraska,

Dear friend:_ I thank you for the letter of communication concerning Mr. Thomas Wilson, but am not quite clear as to which you would place first in your estimate, Mr. Wilson or Mr. Hitchcock. Mr. H. J. Webber of the Shaw School of Botany has also been mentioned in connection with the chair here. Can you tell me anything of him? I think he has more of experience than the others in teaching botany, and has followed a special lines of work which our experiment station is equiped for. I need all the help that my friends can give in selecting for this important department. We are unable to tempt by superior salary any man of established reputation, and must be satisfied to find one who can grow with us.

Yours Truly, Geo. T. Fairchild

Kansas State Agricultural College. Geo T. Fairchild, President Manhattan, Kansas, Sept. 24th. '91

Thos. A Williams, Brookings, South Dakota, Dear Sir:_

We have not yet filled the chair of botany in this college, and shall be willing to consider any applications of information as to work and special qualifications. There are several applicants of good repute, but we have not yet found one in every respect up to our desires in experience as a teacher and associations with experimental work. We prefer, other things equal, an older man, and shall look well around the circle of avaliable canidates.

Yours truly, Geo. T. Fairchild

Dear Prof. Bessey, There seems always to be some confusion about the annals of Botany and bills come always surprisingly. Have you received the first number of Vol. V? I understood that they had sent you vols. III and IV except

one unissued part. I should be glad to know whether you have received every thing regularly. Of the Naturalist I have received the numbers of 1890 except the December number. No numbers of 1891 have been sent. Was it intended to send me the 1891 numbers? I shall not be at Washington next week. I have not been very well this summer and do not feel that I can go to Washington during the hot weather. As soon as possible I shall go to the Mountains for I need a charge and rest. Yours, truly, W. G. Harlow.
