Dear Prof. Bessey; I was in Chicago last week and find that, in order to secure the space we shall want for the station exhibits, we must make a definite statement of our requirements at an early day. Will you please write me, no later than Nov. 20, stating the kind and amount of space which you will want forthe exhibit of mushrooms? Will you want wall or table cases, or both, and how many square feet of each? Will you want any floor space? [?] wall cases will probable be nine feet in the clear, so as to allow for six rows of herbarium sheets. If you want special [?on] of case it can probably be arranged. Please write as full as possible, so that proper arrangements can be made. I think we shall have ample space, but the authorities want us to show that we have material in sight to fill it before they will assign it.

Yours very truly, S. [K?]. Tracy.

COMMITTEE ON EXHIBIT AT WORLD'S FAIR. H. P. ARMSBY, CHAIRMAN STATE COLLEGE, PA. G. E. MORROW, CHAMPAIGN, ILLS. C. E. THORNE, COLUMBUS, OHIO. S. M. TRACY, AGRICULTURAL COLLEGE, MISS. W. A. HENRY, MADISON, WIS.

Agricultural College, Miss. Nov. 17, 1891. Dear Prof. Bessey:

Yours of Nov. 14 is at hand, and your sketch of case desired is almost a copy of one which I sent to Halsted yesterday, and is just what we want. In many lines it will be impossible to show all the material in the wall case, and so I think it will be well to have the space under the table part of the case arranged for storing herbarium sheets, which can be used when wanted. Our idea is, to have the cases as uniform as is possible, but of course variations can be made when necessary. For the cases containing parasitic fungi it may be better to have the table case in front only a foot, but we will see about that later, when we know more definitely what material we shall have. The cases will all be made by the Dept. of Agriculture, and at the expense of the Dept. It is the idea of Sec'y Willits that each Station will bear the expenses of preparing its own part of the exhibit, and that it will be shipped to and from Chicago at the expense of the Department. The cost to each Station will be only the cost of preparing the material, and whatever is sent will remain the property of the Station sending it. In special cases,

2 I think the Stations may be able to secure assistance in the matter of preparation, but that will not be a general rule. I suppose this will apply mostly in cases where the exhibit is perishable, or where it will not be of permanent value to the station sending. If there are special reasons why you should have assistance, please write fully as to how it will be used, and why it is needed, and I will see what can be done. Prospects generally are good, and I think we shall find that the botanists are fully up with the others in their work. Scribner, Atkinson, Pammel, and Halsted are all making extensive preparaions, and nearly every Station is doing something. Yours as ever, Sla. Tracey. P. S. It is the plan to provide uniform herbarium sheets and labels, the latter to be printed; printing to be done by the Dept.
