Kansas State Agricultural College.

GEO. T. FAIRCHILD, President

Manhattan, Kansas, Sept. 5th, '91

Prof. C. E. Bessey, Lincoln, Nebraska, Dear friend:_ We are in need of a professor of botany to succeed Prof. Kellerman, who has taken the chair in the Ohio University. Can you name a fit person for the place ? The salary of Prof. Kellerman would have been $2000; to an equally experienced teacher it would be the same. If we are compelled to take a young man and build him up, we shall expect to secure his services for less, depending on circumstances. What can you say in favor of Mr. A. S. Hitchcock, Assistant under Prof. Trelease of St. Louis? I think he studied under you, in both his under-graduate and post graduatecourses. Any suggestions you have to make in the case, I shall greatfully receive.

Yours truly, Geo. T. Farichild

GEO. T. FAIRCHILD, PRESIDENT

Manhattan, Kansas, Oct. 21st, '91

Prof. C. E. Bessey, Lincoln, Nebraska, Dear friend:_ We have chosen today a successor to Prof. Kellerman, Mr. A. S. Hitchcock, whom you have so heartily recommended to us, and from whom we have reason to expect good work on account of such good bakers as yourself, Prof. Trelease, and Dr. Halsted. We hope to have him with us before the first of Janurary.

Yours truly, Geo. T. Fairchild
