My Dear Sir:

Circumstances
do not seem to favor our meeting, though I have
long wished to make your personal acquaintance.
It will not be practicable for me to attend the
new meeting of Iowa State Horticultural Society at
Des Moines, where I suppose you will be, but
Mr. [J. D. Putnam?] goes [south?] with his mother & hopes
to meet you there. Has any move [ever?] been made
to [?]? [The?] [?] of State entomologist in this
State [?] [?] [?] of the adjoining dates? Should
not something be [sent?] in this direction?
You may have some personal views of your own
in this matter. I will merely state that many of us
think that the best man for such a position
is Mr. [Putnam?] himself, he is young, zealous and
has shown no little ability as an original investigator;
if placed in such a position he would spare
no efforts to fill it [?] to himself & for the
benefit of the State, he as already an exclusive
correspondence in this country & Europe, and
could command any amount of testimonials
as to his qualifications and special fitness for the
work. Perhaps his greatest fault? would be too
much thoroughness, but this would hardl be a
fault in our eyes. I beg to command this
