Special meeting October 21, 1959

The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska met on this day for a special meeting at 2:00 p.m. at Scottsbluff, Nebraska Regents present: C. E. Swanson, President J. G. Elliott Richard E. Adkins B. N. Greenberg Regents absent: Frank O. Foote J. L. Welsh University officals present: Messrs. Clifford M. Hardin, Chancellor Joseph Soshnik, Assistant Corporation Secretary

Minutes Approved

The minutes of the proceedings of the Board at its meeting held October 2,1959, were approved, copies of the same having been transmitted to the several members of the Board under its order of October 1, 1926.

Resignations approved

From the Chancellor's office come reports of resignations, new appointments, adjustments in work and salary, retirement and deceased persons. MOney being available for those purposes from former apportionment by the Board, the following actions are taken. It was moved by Regent Adkins, seconded by Regent Greenberg, motion put to vote and carried, that the follwing resignations be approved as recommended by the Chancellor's office. Resignations Darrell E. Anderson, General Counselor, Junior Division and Counseling Service, effective August 31, 1959 Allice Elliot, Research Associate in Physiology, effective September 1, 1959 A. E. Goedeken, Assistant Supervisor of Trade Related Correspondence Instruction, effective May 31, 1959. Elva Harris, Assistant Instructor in Clinical Nursing, effective September 30, 1959 Joanne W. Ivanoff, Psychometrist, Junior Division and Counseling Service, effective October 1, 1959 Richard McCashland, Assistant Football Coach, effective October 1, 1959. Laurie S. Robertson, Assistant Professor of Economics, effective August 31, 1959. It was moved by Regent Elliot, seconded by Regent Greenberg, motion put to vote and carried, that the following new appointments be approved as recommended by the Chancellor's office.

New appointments approved

New Appointments Fulltime Extension Division James A. Stone, Instructor in College Correspondence, effective September 21, 1959 at $4200 per year; in place of Gary Roberts College of Medicine Martian R. Cunnigham, Assistant Instructor in Neurology and Psychiatry, without salary, effective October 1, 1959 Grace E. dearden, Instructor in Nursing Fundamentals, at $350 per month, effective September 1, 1959; in place of Maxine Cook. Sybil S. Sawinsky, Instructor in Physical Education, Counselor and Activities Director, School of Nursing, at $400 per month effective September 1, 1959; in place of Norma Johnson

Special Meeting October 21, 1959

TEMPORARY AND PART-TIME College of Arts and Sciences Jane H. Dein, Instructor in Romance Languages, at $2300 for the first semester, 1959-60; in place of Claude Magny resigned.

It was moved by Regent Greenberg, seconded by Regent Adkins, motion put to vote and carried, that the following adjustments in work and salary be approved as recommended by the Chancellor's office.

College of Agriculture Jacqueline S. Jakway, Research Associate in Animal Pathology, effective Sept. 30, 1959; post-doctoral fellowship from Public Health Service with salary paid directly from P.H.S.

College of Arts and Sciences Kenneth D. Rose, additional appointment as Research Associate in Bacteriology without salary, effective November 1, 1959.

Valentine Suprunowicz, part-time Instructor in Germanic Languages, from $1000 to $2440 per year effective October 1, 1959; to assume additional teaching duties.

David Levine, Associate Professor of Psychology, from $8300 to $9500 per year effective July 1, 1959; account W1128-ID, USPHS.

Extension Division Emiel J. Christensen, Coordinator of Community Services and Professor of Architecture, from $4960 to $3000 per year effective September 1, 1959; to work 4 days per week for the University, and the remainder for the Division of Nebraska Resources at $3000 per year. Additional salary of $2000 is received for teaching services in the Dept. of Architecture during the second semester of the academic year.

Minnie I . Groth, reappointment as TV-Correspondence Instructor half time, at $2200 per year effective September 14, 1959.

Student Affairs Olga Ellen Steele, from 50% to 70% time Foreign Student Adviser, and from $3700 to $5180 per year effective October 1, 1959.

Turkish University Program Harold L. Allen, Associate Chief Advisor of University of Nebraska Staff in Turkey, from $9625 to $10,200 per year effective November 1, 1959 to September 17, 1960; assignment in addition to present duties as Extension and Information Specialist.

Retirements approved

It was moved by Regent Greenberg, seconded by Regent Elliott, motion put to vote and carried, that the following retirements be approved as recommended by the Chancellor's office.

RETIREMENT

Bertha Burtch, Clerk in Information Department, at $61.22 per year, single life, effective October 31, 1959; physical disability.

Dana Cole, Professor Emeritus of Business Organization and Management at $1111.93 per year, joint and survivorship, effective July 1, 1959.

Mabel R. Hughes, Clerk in Information Department, at $153.84 per year, single life, effective October 31, 1959; physical disability.

William J. Ryan, Janitor, at $53.67 per year, joint and survivorship, effective November 1, 1959.

Deaths recorded

From the Chancellor's office comes a report of the death of three staff memers. It was moved by Regent Adkins, seconded by Regent Greenberg, motion put to vote and carried, that these deaths be made a matter of record in these minutes and the University payrolls adjusted accordingly. The names of the deceased and date of death are as follows:

Accept final payment from Carnegie Corporation for Community Education program

It was moved by Regent Elliott, seconded by Regent Adkins, motion put to vote and carried, that final payment in the amount of $5,000 be accepted from the Carnegie Corporation of New York in support of the Community Education program under the direction of Dr. Dale Hayes. This is the final payment under the grant of $79,200 made by the Carnegie Corporation in 1957.

Authorize U of N Press to publish From Realism to Reality in Recent American Painting by Virgil Barker

It was moved by Regent Adkins, seconded by Regent Elliott, motion put to vote and carried, that the president and assistant corporation secretary be authorized and directed to execute a Memorandum of Agreement with Virgil Barker in connection with publication by the University of Nebraska Press of From Realism to Reality in Recent American Painting.

Advisory Committee for Advanced Professional Degrees in Teachers College appointed

From Dean Walter K. Beggs, Teachers College, comes a recommendation for the following new appointments to the Advisory Committee for Advanced Professional Degrees in Teachers College. All appointments are to be effective from September 1, 1959:

It was moved by Regent Elliott, seconded by Regent Greenberg, motion put to vote and carried, that the above appointments be approved.

Authorize Research and Marketing Act contract, USDA, for study at College of Agriculture

It was moved by Regent Greenberg, seconded by Regent Elliott, motion put to vote and carried, that the president and assistant corporation secretary be authorized and directed to execute a Research and Marketing Act Contract with the U. S. Department of Agriculture. This contract provides for payments to the University of Nebraska in the amount of $23,014 in support of "A Study to determine the effect of the amount of Dietary Protein on the Metabolic Response of a Group of Adult Men to an assortment of Fats."

Authorize chancellor to apply for grant to relocate Former Admin. Bldg, and construct new building on its site near art gallery

It was moved by Regent Adkins, seconded by Regent Elliott, motion put to vote and carried, that the Chancellor be authorized to make application to an anonymous private source for a $250,000 grant to provide replacement space for the former Administration Building. This grant would make it possible to remove the former administration building and to construct a new building adjacent to the new art museum which could be used for housing the Department of Art, be harmonious in design with the new art museum, and make possible a proper setting for both buildings.

Approve request for Agr. Exp. Station to use land at Ordnance Plant at Mead, Nebr.

It was moved by Regent Adkins, seconded by Regent Greenberg, motion put to vote and carried, that University administrative personnel be authorized to make appropriate requests for transfer to the University of certain land and buildings of the Ordnance Plant at Mead, Nebraska, no longer needed by the U. S. Government. This land would be used to meet some of the needs of the Agricultural Experiment Station.

There being no further business, the Board adjourned.

The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska met on this day for a special meeting at 8:30 P.M. in the board room, Administration Building on the city campus.

Regents present: C. E. Swanson, President J. G. Elliott Richard E. Adkins Frank O. Foote J. L. Welsh B. N. Greenberg

University officials present: Messrs. Clifford M. Hardin, Chancellor A. C. Breckenridge, Dean of Faculties Joseph Soshnik, Comptroller John K. Selleck, Corporation Secretary Carl A. Donaldson, Business Manager

Alsp present as a visitor was Sabahattin Ozbek, Rector of Attaturk University in Turkey.

Approve leaves of absence

It was moved by Regent Elliott, seconded by Regent Adkins, motion put to vote and carried, that the following leaves of absence be approved as recommended by the Chancellor's office.

LEAVE OF ABSENCE

David Murray Danielson, Assistant in Animal Husbandry at North Platte Experiment Station, leave of absence without pay from February 1 to March 21, 1960; to pursue graduate study.

Everett E. Peterson, Extension Economist, leave of absence with pay from January 26, to March 10, 1960; Dr. Peterson will be one of team of nine Agricultural Extension staff members to visit seven countries in the East--project in cooperation with Foreign Agricultural Service.

It was moved by Regent Foote, seconded by Regent Elliott, motion put to vote and carried, that the following new appointments be approved as recommended by the Chancellor's office.
