it was a little island about as big as Texas. In size Texas is no where To illustrate - one day last week [ ] drays loaded with wool came to Coolabah. They had been nearly 12 months on the road bringing the wool over two thousand miles from a Station in Northern Territory and the freight overland amounts to nearly $100 per ton. It takes 36 hours by rail to go from Sydney to Brisbane and you can travel over two thousand miles overland north from Brisbane. Adelaide is as far from Sydney as Denver from New York and Perth is a thousand miles farther west, - a great land? well rather! I think it as good a place as there is in the world for a young man with capital of cash, brain or muscle. There is a long lean new [chum] tramp to be seen in this neighborhood wearing a pair of gold specs, leggins and a most peculiar looking tin can that is a cross between a liver pad and a wash boiler. He seems to be a little off in the upper story for he spends his time gathering weeds and grasses & hay seed and mosquitos and burrs and such rubbish, and is heard to mutter strange gibberish words like ["Theloecystis] chrysophthalmus" "Come off the roof" and the like. They say he is a Yankee but there are doubts. However some say that he is pseudo scientifico-botanical and preserves with devout care the weeds collected. The bush is one blaze of yellow

and green - worth crossing the wide Pacific to see, - Spring time where with you are ripening harvests and a dying summer. Shearing is in progress at all the neigboring sheep stations with a good but not heavy clip. I have seen the machines and the hand shears at work. A young man sent me an emu skin this morning - another treasure to carry home The list now includes a kangaroo skin, emu-eggs, emu skin, sea shells and a collection of flowers the latter not worked out. If I stay here permanently will send the latter to you, otherwise will "bringen sie mit." With best regards and wishes Yours Truly Jared G. Smith
