DEAR SIR;
SINCE YOU WROTE ME TO DO SO I HAVE EXAMINED A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF MARSILIA AND FIND AS YOU THOUGHT THAT THE PLANTS GROWING ON DRY GROUND ARE SOMEWHAT HAIRY.
SOMETIMES A SINGLE ROOTSTALK WILL BE CONTINUOUS FROM THE LARGE SMOOTH PLANT TO THE SMALL HAIRY ONE. THERE SEEMS TO BE ONLY THE ONE SPECIES GROWING IN THIS VICINITY.
YOURS TRULY H. Hapeman.

Dear Sir
To-night I send you two plants for classification. They may be the same plant at different stages of development. They are a class of plant with which I am quite unfamiliar but they are quite abundant here and I am anxious to know the classification. You inquired some time since about Plantago patagonic variety [illegible] Yes. it grows so abundantly as to be a nuisance, in some pastures there.
Yours Truly; H. Hapeman.
