Dr Sir:

Your name became somewhat familiar to me through hearing it mentioned by Miss Sarah Moore of your city.

I have therefore taken the liberty of writing you, – to ask if we may not have one or more articles from you for the Microscope during 1887? – on microscopical botany.

We have among our contributors such well known men as General Cox of Cincinnati, – Prof. [Win?] Rogers of Naterville, Prof. [Ivison?] Gage of Cornell &c &c. In December we

expect to publish an announcement of our contributors &c &c for 1887 – and we should be very glad to include your name in the list.

If you should have drawings to illustrate your papers, – we will reproduce them in photo-engraving if not too large.

As our journal is circulated among scientific men in this country and abroad, – articles published in our pages are read by hundreds of thoughtful people.

Hoping that we may hear favorably from you.

Very Sincerely Yours W. P. Manton

Prof Bessey.— Lincoln.

Dr Sir:

I thank you very much for your kind letter lately received. I desire also to thank you for your little work on botany published by Holt, – although I had seen it before, it was not until today that I appreciated its merits. The fact is, I have been attempting to give my wife a little instruction in botanical microscopy, and have not found just the book for her until yours was picked up and purchased today, being the filling for a "long felt want." — I

With kind regards, Very Sincerely W. P. Manton.

Dear Sir:

May we have an illustrated paper from you by the first of March for our April issue? –

The illustration will be reproduced by the photo-engraving process, – and the drawing should therefore be made in India ink, – as you probably know. We should be glad to have the microscopical structure of some plant [treated?] of; – but the subject we will leave to you.

If the above date is not [?], – please remember us at [your?] [earlies?] opportunity. [much obliged?]

[Very?] Sincerely W. P. Manton. signature
