We thus sold [illegible] more than [illegible] I make the confession for the whole body for I be lieve many others feel it as now who did not see it so when the thing was done. Dr. Thomas and I stored almost alone in open opposition to it.
But our Academy is all insight in general aim and plan and purpose. In this [illegible] business only have we sinned. So dont be too hard on me. I wanted to elect Prof. [illegible] of Iowa City as our President but the man who had made the big promise (though they were thinner than skimmed milk_ carried the day.
If I could see you personally I could ex plain matters more fully and satisfactorily

If I can get a black outline map I can add what I wish to it and have it photoengraved at trifling cost. I note what you state regarding the different broods. Try and get me black outline map. Dear Sir
In accordance wilth your desire I sought and and found the inventor of that piece of [illegible] name is [illegible] Clarke, and Highland-[illegible] is his address In answer to his invitation I [illegible] his resid[illegible] Tues. evening to see the machina and [illegible] it. He spent the whole evening showing it in different ways. He has improved it since I saw it before. But has not yet put it upon the market though he thinks he will soon.
It shows either picture or natural object: by reflected light: gives splendid [illegible] and shows the [illegible] color of the object or picture correct to a limit I had him show the leaves a stem of a

branch from a house plant some pieces of wood bark a watch inside and out and prices of coal and cinders [illegible] of course being so black did not have it color shown as distinctly but the [illegible] was good [illegible] showed will as did the other objects- the "movement" of the watch in motion showed the [illegible] on [illegible] its saw-[illegible] wood [illegible] very distinct
[illegible] this objection however for your work which I [illegible] would be [illegible] in some instances. The light which for uses is from live lamp common placed on either sides of the object and they heat the object up to near the boiling point of water.
It is not a complicated machine I worked it myself to [illegible] it and only costs about 2 or 4 [cents] per [illegible] it however having his address you can [illegible] to him and he told me he would be glad to answer every question you

may wish to ask concerning the thing Well the "Hub" is [illegible] a [illegible] isn't it! [illegible] the books have one [illegible] import ant item but I have [illegible] to [illegible] what few I have in my room and [illegible] at the Trust. By the way [illegible] chem. library at the Trust is a most complete one indeed.
Have found my work very pleasant and instructive: and my [illegible] has been such that I have the offer of the same place another year with larger salary. Have also some other pretty good shows They [illegible] one Chemist this year and Prof [illegible] says he will have to stretch the blanket to do that. My work this [illegible] has [illegible] as the programme sent you but my health has been good and so have [illegible] myself splendidly.
Was very glad to receive your kind letter had almost given you up but then I knew you were busy as you always are

Had a letter from J. C. Arthur not long since. It sums to think that he will not stay when he is very [illegible]. Through no fault of his of course. but I suppose you know all about it. I will gladly report on opening to him if any comes to my notice I think we J. A. C. graduateought to stand by one-another. and render all the [illegible] help we can dont you? Will [illegible] matter a lot and said little ponder my "[illegible]" please remember me to the Faculty- and especially to Prof Pope and [illegible] live the J. H. C. !
