Prof. C. E. Bessey

Dear Sir

I have just completed a somewhat careful examination of your Botany and in accordance with your segment I take pleasure in expressing my opinion of its merits. teaching Botany by lectures [?] after [?] experiments I have found that [?] such an [order]? in the treatment of the different topics as that [?] you adapt is [bees]? and proves most successful. No American book with which I am familiar is comparable to yours for the purpose for which it is designed and I am sure that is will prove excedingly valuable, both as a text book for college and as a [normal]? of the subject for the general student. I congratulate you upon the number and excellence of the engravings and the general appearance of the book. I am very glad that so good a book is before [her]? students over.

Yours very truly,

My dear Prof. Bessey

Since the receipt of your new botanical text-bok some months ago my circumstances have been such that I could not give it the [illegible] examination I desired and hence its delay in acknowledgment. During the last week I have taken it [illegible] and gone over it carefully [illegible] must say that you have succeeded in giving in a condensed [illegible] admirable manner the best results contained in the works of the great European [illegible] placed within reach of students at a moderate cost a [illegible] which can be read in the [illegible] room and laboratory. For this and the large number of excellent illustration borrowed and original you deserve this thanks of all [illegible] and teachers of the science. I shall [illegible] the book into the hands of my students.

Yours very truly [illegible] C. Porter.
