My Dear Prof. Bessey,

Were I of the other [sex?], this, considering the date, might be a Valentine – but far from any thing of the sort – it is to be a very prosy matter-of-fact letter. Dear Sir

Sometime since I [?] from Henry [that?] [I?] [bought?] a [copy?] of your Botany for High Schools + Colleges for attack of inflamation of the eyes prevented me at the time from giving to the work the prompt + careful examination which I desired – I am now able to say that the book appears to me to possess the [more? / sure?] merit of Sach's text book at one fourth of the [?], + [to?] be especially adapted to aid students in obtaining their knowledge
