Dear Sir.

Your letter to Dr. [Rothbrook?] (together with a copy of your book) has come to hand. On the 19th of June last Dr. R. left us for Europe. He is now with Prof DeBarre of [Strassburg?] and will continue with him till February next, engaged in studying the life history of the Cryptogam[ia?]. He writes use that he is delighted with Prof DeBarre and his methods of instruction. I shall inform him of your kindness

I showed it to Josiah Hughes who was much pleased with it and told me he would order one. I shall to-day show it to Benjamin Eberhart Esq. one of our good botanists.

I have just read, from yr publishers notice that at your respect they had sent to me a copy of your book; and also information in a letter from my wife that it had been received. I am sorry that [?] [?] absence from here I cannot read it and make a final notice of it for [your?] scientific paper.

I am sure however that it will do you credit and command a sale. I shall contribute all I can toward the letter.

Your [favor?] of Aug. 11th. The Botany came in due time. I have not had time to examine it so as to be prepared to criticize it, as you invite me to do, but, so far as I have looked over it, I have been greatly pleased with the book. Your plan differs from that of our ordinary text books and is a departure in the right direction.
