$35,000 per week would be a conservative
estimate of the Wild West receipts, and the
panoramas are all enjoying a boom. From
these casual statistics anyone with a mathematical
turn of mind may gain some idea
of the enormous sums expended during the
world's fair period for amusements.
The record made during the world's fair
season by Buffalo Bill's Wild West up to
the present, numbering 288 performances,
has been a most remarkable one. Not only
have all previous records made by the great
exhibition been broken, but the receipts
have been larger than ever before known
for the same length of time in the history
of amusements. The fact is that the
impression made upon all visitors
has been so favorable and lasting
that the Wild West has been thoroughly
advertised and commended throughout the
country, and everybody who comes to Chicago
comes determined to see Buffalo
Bill and his great exhibition while visiting
the world's fair. During the past
week M. Bartholdi, the great sculptor and
designer of the statue of Liberty, now
standing in New York harbor, accompanied
by his wife and M. Salmon and also Mr. Curtis,
assistant secretary of state; Mr. McAdoo,
assistant secretary of the navy, and
many other distinguished personages, have
been among the most delighted guests of the
Wild West. This afternoon fully 200 of the
contestants in the great military shooting
contest, just closed at Fort Sheridan, will
attend the Wild West in a body and in full
uniform. All of them are desirous of seeing
the expert shooting done by Buffalo Bill
and others of the Wild West.
Just before commencing the afternoon
performance, at 3 p. m., photographs of the
grand stand and occupants will be taken by
a new process and be of sufficient size to
make the picture of each visitor clear and
distinct.
