Jan'y 29th 1887.

My dear Professor,

Can you name the right person to
come here and teach botany for me next spring
term of 11 (or 12) weeks? Our work is so much that
we shall be obliged to have help; perhaps you can help
us – to the extent of naming a teacher.

Our work in botany years ago for reasons then
reasonable was relegated to this spring term: two classes
preparatory & freshman have that Study. The [Prof'y?]
Class (Scientific Course) has already taken 2/5 of the term's work by alternation
with the Chemistry of the full term so they will
have 3/5 of a full terms work; but there will be two sections
on acct of numbers (There were between 40 & 50 of them). The freshman class all have botany
a full terms work but they number 95 — 3 sections at
least if our facilities will allow & we shall try to make
them do so. There will ge practically 5 classes.

Besides I have a course of lectures to the Seniors in
Applied Geology and, unless it be abandoned this year, a
course of lectures & laboratory in Mineralogy to the Juniors.

I am now intending to abandon this last named work
and throw my strength into the work in botany.
