HAVE A GOOD TIME.

Buffalo Bill Entertains the Waifs as Guests.

Yesterday was poor children's day and was fittingly celebrated by the element it represented. Thousands of children of both sexes spent a very enjoyable day. They did not attend the World's Fair, but were allowed the freedom of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. To say that they appreciated the treat would be putting it mildly, and to show their appreciation they presented generous W. F. Cody with an elaborate gold plate in imitation of a messenger service slip. This tenders him the services or the messengers is long as he lives. There were many crippled and maimed waifs among them who were well taken care of by their youthful associates. The parade formed at Market and Madison streets, passed through Fifth avenue, Washington, Dearborn and Monroe streets. The Illinois Central furnished free trains, which the youngsters boarded at the lakefront. Among the firms who donated prizes were the Pairpoint Manufacturing company, A. Lipman, Lyon & Healy, Meriden, Britannia company, Mack &Becker, Brainard & Sons, A. G. Spaulding, and Louis E. Black.

WILLIE WAS ARRESTED.

But He "Took a Fall Out o' Chimmy Just de Same."

When Willie Johnson, one of Mr. Daniels's most especially washed waifs, smelt powder and saw Col. Cody put to rout seventy or eighty redskins single handed he wanted to go and do likewise. He didn't care with whom or what he conducted an encounter, but he thought "Chimmy'" McGill would do as well as anybody.

"We're de ell's Chimmy?" he inquired of a friend.

"Chimmy's over on de good side 'mong de girls," said the other.

"Hully gee! See me go spoil his hair cut," said Willie, and he went.

Just in one of the intervals when Buffalo Bill's tame Sioux had retired to be revived from his prodigies of valor, the spectators were astonished to notice a little figure with a brand-new hair cut and a clean collar, worn as though its owner had suspicions of its propriety, make his way across the arena. He went straight to the spot where "Chimmy" McGill was conducting a miniature flirtation through the medium of a popcorn bag, said not a word, but biffed him between the eyes. Then he returned solemnly back across the arena to his seat. Retribution, however, came to him later when two of his enemies, "de cops," hauled the hero from his seat and locked him up in Woodlawn station.

It is violating no confidence to assert that if the waifs of Chicago were to decide the matter the Hon. William F. Cody could be president of these United States did he so desire.

BRAVO! BUFFALO BILL

He Entertained Chieago's Poverty- Stricken Children When the Haughty Fair Directors Refused Them Admission.

CHICAGO, July 27.-This was the day set apart by Mayor Harrison's proclamation for a free summer outing for all the poor children in the city, and over his official signature as mayor he asked that Chicago's poverty-stricken little ones be allowed to see the White City, in which corporate Chicago has invested $5,000,000. There was no room for them there, and it was feared that they might prove an annoyance. Buffalo Bill's Wild West is a private investment and under no obligations to the city of Chicago or its poor. Buffalo Bill was not asked by Mayor Harrison or anybody else over an official signature to throw open his gates to Chicago's poor children. But it did not take him five seconds to make up his mind what he would do the minute he heard that the World's Fair knew no "open sesame" for the newsboys and the shoe- blacks, and to-day 15,000 boys and girls from the slums and alleys marched in procession through the streets, became the guests of the Illinois Central to Sixty-third street, and were royally entertained by Buffalo Bill, who gave them the most glorious day in all the history of Chicago waifdom.
