General John M. Burke returned this
morning from Iowa Falls, Iowa, full of enthusiasm
over the race. He was satisfied
with the race but declared the riders
to be a "lemonade brigade." "They don't
drink anything but lemonade. Why, I've
bought a string of lemonade from Iowa to
Chicago and the boys just broke me."

Smith and Gillespie, who were only a
short distance behind the leaders, had not
arrived at noon, and Sheldon, another
humane officer, declared that they had gone
thirteen miles out of the way and are probably
lost in the woods.
