date. We have been having + still continue to have very hot weather. Yesterday [morn?] Mrs. Welch + Mrs. [?] appeared – they were just returned from Corning – had been there a few days on the journey and were quite worn out. Mrs. Welch was sick with a head-ache – but anxious to reach home so after resting awhile they started off on a hand-car for the college.

They had had a hard two weeks with Minnie + seemed delighted to get home again. As soon as Mrs. Welch got to [Minnies?] home

the [tired?] girl left – [said?] it made her home sick to have Mrs. Shaw's mother there. Then Mr. Shaw sprained his ankle + had a bilious attack – + Mrs. Welch, [?] + Minnie had to wait on him and do all the work. Poor Minnie even had the fire to make + the soft coal to bring. It made [?] most sick to see Minnie doing suck work. Altogether I think the visit was far from enjoyable – + now they say they will try and rest and keep cool. College road or bridges, but they expect to commence [on?] them next week.

There is a rumor that the opening of the term is to be postponed one week – but I hear the Pres. says that he supposes the students can't get there till a week late – + I presume that is what the report started from. I hear the storm did not extend as far North as you are – for which I am thankful – and Mrs. Welch says there has been no rain in Corning. The water [?] stands over a foot deep in

our cellar, but Mr. [Bigelow?] says it will do no good to try and get it out for a few days yet, as the ground is so full of water that it will come right back again. The children all keep well – tho' the heat makes them uncomfortable + occasionally cross and fretful. [East?] has had heat rash on his back for some days.
