158Proceedings Special and informal meeting of the Board of Regents. MAY 15 1888 Special and informal meeting Omaha, Neb. Omaha,Nebraska(sic) May 15th, 1888. The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska,met(sic) in special and informal meeting at the Millard Hotel in the City of Omaha,Neb.(sic) upon the informal call of the President,and(sic) by agreement of five members. Present, Regents Burnham,Gere,Hull,Mallalieu(sic) and Roberts. Object stated. The chairman stated the object of the meeting to be the consideration informally of the question of retaining the services of Dr.D.B.(sic) Brace for the coming year,and(sic) called for the reading of the proceedings of the Faculty touching the subject. Objection by Chancellor. Chancellor Manatt made objection under section 6. of chapter 5. of the By-laws,as(sic) to the method of communication between the Board and the Faculty and also raising the question whether there was any business properly before the meeting as coming from the Faculty,and(sic) insisted upon a ruling. The chairman ruled that this being an informal meeting by agreement, if no member objected,the(sic) body might properly receive and read for its information,any(sic) document or paper. The resolutions and recommendations purporting to be official copies of actions of the Faculty had on the 14th.inst.relating(sic) to the case of Dr.Brace(sic) were then read by the Secretary for information together with recommendations of the Faculty touching the same matter and filed with the Board at its March meeting 1888. Recommendations by Chancellor. Chancellor Manatt insisted upon his point and made the following recommendations verbally. 1. That the Board at its meeting in June next create the chair of Physics. 2. That the Board also appoint Dr. Bruce to said chair at such salary as it may find possible after the order and subject to the other recommendations for appointments contained in the communication of the Faculty filed in March last. Referred to finance com't. Regent Mallalieu moved that the matter be referred to the finance committee to report immediately after consultation with Dr. Brace. Carried. Report. The finance committee reported verbally after consultation that the ultamatim of Dr. Brace was a guaranty of appointment to a full professorship and full salary and that the committee was not prepared to advise the Board at this time. 155 | 158Proceedings Special and informal meeting of the Board of Regents.
