Dear Sir:

Yours of the 23rd ult relating to your charge per col-
umn for contributing matter to the Gazette has remained unanswered
until this time on account of absence of Mr. Alvin II. Sanders, who
had conducted the correspondence with you up on this subject.

We regret to have to say, that while we have the very highest
opinion of your qualifications for this sort of work, the price name
is so much in excess of what we are paying for originial matter in
other departments of our paper that we will not be able for the pres-
ent at least to avail ourselves of your valuable services in this
line. It will afford us a great deal of pleasure however, to forward the Gazette regularly to your address, gratis, in consideration of the
few paragraphs already furnished; and when later in the year we make
our arrangements for contributors for 1888 we may be pleased to reopen
negotiations with you with a view towards securing your assistance.
You are, of course, aware that during the spring and summer months
farmers and stock growers have not nearly as much leisure to devote
