41THE CRAZY CRANK From the developments of yesterday it would seem thera was much more in the Monday night shooting scrape, of which Buffalo Bill was the supposed intended victim, than was at first thought to be the case. The particulars of the shooting were given in yesterday's NONPAREIL. As was then stated, Mr. Cody offered $100 for the arrest of the crank, and yesterday morning at an early hour officers Cusick and Brooks arrested a man named J. T. Benedict, who is supposed to be the one who did the shooting. The arrest was made in front of the Pacific house. The fellow, who has lived in the city for several years, and who at one time kept bar at the Kiel house, was taken to police court, and was arraigned on two charges, one for assault with intent to kill, and another for the larceny of a saddle. The hearing of the first case was then continued until the 15th [inst.?], and that of the larceny case until the 14th. Benedict was bound over in $1,000 on the first charge, and $300 on the second. In default of bail he was sent to jail. We understand still another warrant is out for him on the charge of threatening the life of a person. It is said Benedict of some other fellow took the saddle from Bowle's livery stable, at the point of a revolver, threatening to shoot the employe of the barn if he attempted to interfere. The fellow has given no explanation for the offense of which he is charged. | 41 |
