422 1/2 Saint Charles Ave.
New Orleans, May 4, '85.

My dear professor

What are you k[?]ing of me
I wonder? Some unpleasant things no doubt.

I hasten to explain my silence in the hope of
forgiveness [who?] you know all.

Soon after you left the fair I was attacked
with inflamed eyes which continued for three
weeks preventing me from either writing or reading.

Upon recovery a mass of work had accumulated
that had to be done.

In the mean time I have frequently
seen Gov. Furnas and he has assured me
that he would have you sent down here
again to collect for yourself.

Hence I've looked to see you bounce
in upon us any day, so have felt less
concern for your tree specimens while at
the same time over-worked on the affairs
of the herbarium below and the [?]'s work
on the balcony above.

But for fear you cannot come and so
cannot understand my silence I hastily scrawl
this explanation.

[?] [?] is often frustrated with work
and annoyance, but [?] up in hope for
strength for the repacking.

California day approaches and we are full
of especial preparations. A [musicale special is
entertainment?].

We hope you will be here that day (7th).
With regards of both,

Yours,
[J?] G L[emmons?]
