Which Preserve the Record.

Our American annals, both the Northern and Southern are full of characters, the story of whose lives should be handed down from father to son, for the emulation of posterity. But their story will perish, bearing no fruit, if it be not gathered up and preserved by some such method of extended research as has been adopted by the publishers of this work.

Men and Women of TO-DAY.

While the Cyclopedia aims to preserve all that is worthy of the past, it will give special prominence to the men and women who are doing the work and moulding the thought of the present time. These biographies include all the facts worthy of mention, and taken together will make a complete history of the United States--political, social, commercial, and industrial.

It will Never Die.

Such a work will never die, and in it will be found all the leading families and founders of the Republic; to its pages generations will turn to learn something of those who have gone before, and the interest of all who have taken their place in it will be perpetually kept alive.

Potrait Gallery.

The wrok will be illustrated with several thousand portraits of the most eminent men, excuted in a new style of vgnette etching, from original drawings or photographs, made by the most accomplished artists of the time. and accompained by fac-simile autographs.

Ancestral Homes.

As pictures of homes surroundings add so much interest to biography, it is intended to insert views of the places of residence of distinguished personages, which will give to the work a new feature never before presented--the portayal of the future Ancestoral Homes of America.
The publishers respectfully announce that the National Cyclopedia of American Biography will be sold only by subscription, through their authorized agents. Each subscription must be for the complete work, as separate volumes will not be supplied under any circumstances.
