19U.S. Department of Agriculture, FORESTRY DIVISION. Washington, D.C., Nov. 26, 1888. Prof. C. E. Bessey, Lincoln, Nebraska. Dear Sir: - In rendering your kind assistance offered in preparing an exhibit of rate of growth, will you please keep in mind, that the sections should be taken from the butt-end and every 3 feet up to 12 feet, making in all 5 sections for each tree. They should be cut 2 inches thick and on the North side, as they were situated in the tree, marked on each with an N., each section wrapped in paper separately, and sent under the franks, of which enclosed a number. If many sections are sent from one place, it may be advisable to send the whole lot to the same address by freight, the freight to be paid here. The sections will be prepared here, by steaming, planing, reenforcing annual rings, and varnishing and mounting at their respective heights on two side strips. The exhibit will be credited to the contributors, and a comparative account will be published in the report; a short note giving the position of the tree as to soil surroundings, etc, and its history, if known, should accompany each. | 19U.S. Department of agriculture, FORESTRY DIVISION.
