U.S. Department of Agriculture,
Washington, D. C., September 20, 1887.
Forestry Division.

Prof. Chas. E. Bessey
Lincoln, Nebr.

Dear Sir:–

You will greatly oblige me by stating at your earliest convenience
for publication in my Annual Report what has been done or
is proposed to be done for Forestry in your State and especially:

Whether and in what manner your College or any other educational
institution to your knowledge is interested in forestry.

Whether lately any action has been taken by the State legislature
or other State authorities.

In how far private interests have applied themselves to protection
of woodlands or planting of forest groves.

It seems desirable that the Annual Report from this Division
shoudl contain such information from all parts of the country, and
if you can favor me if it were simply with memoranda and notes, from
which to make up such an account, it will be published with proper
credit to you and place me under obligation.

Respectfully,
[B. E. Fernow?]
Chief of Forestry Division.
