-zine. Dr. Packard will leave the
Naturalist on Dec. 31st unless
he expressly applies for the
position he has held. The Dr.
resigned in consequence of a
note published with reference
to the U. S. Geol Census some
months ago. He probably expects
some benefits from the [Armory?],
in an[y?] case here quite incapable
of criticizing the powers
that be; and as such is quite
unfitted for the position of
editor. We have disagreed for
a long time on that point,
and as I conceive the true interests
of Science in the country require
that the Naturalist should be
independent, I would, and will
never consent to its becoming
the tool of any organization,
especially if that one be a supporter

of the grossest scientific
corruption that this country or
any other has ever seen.

During the past 6 months the
present publishers of the Naturalist
have been neglecting it. I
have made all the arrangements
for having it published from
[??] 188[4?/9?] in Boston, but a
New York proposition is now
on hand, & as it looks better
than the other, I am waiting to
see it acceded. In any case
it will be pushed in future
as it has never been before,
and will be published in better
shape, with better paper and
more illustrations than ever
before. Dr. J. S. S[ingsley?] the
former editor of "Science Record"
will take Dr. Packards place,
and the Magazine will begin
