Prof. C. E. Bessey
My Dear Sir:

The enlargement
of the twigs you send is
undoubtedly due to the attacks
of insects, in other words I
take them to be insect galls.
I find no insects in them,
but they are so very similar
togalls on the tips of the twigs
of our black spruce in which
I hav found insects, that
I do not hesitate to affirm
that they are due to the same
cause. There is no evidence of
a fungoid origin.

Very truly yours
Chas. H. Peck
