Meeting of Faculty of College of Medicine with Dean Ward presiding. Present: Barker, Dales, Everett, Guenther, Heltner, Lehnhoff, Lyman, Powers, Waite, Walker, Wekesser, Willard, Wolcott.

In regard to the "required elective" the Course of study Committee presented recommendations which were scanned, to read as follows:

Since it is greatly to be desired that this institution graduate those who are students of medicine, as well as practitioners - investigators, as well as physicians - it is also desirable that some instruction be given which will turn their attention in that direction and prepare them so far as possible for that type of work. Therefore, this Committee recommends that the elective course which appears in the second year of the four-year course, be used in the following manner:

1. This elective must be taken in some department of the College of Medicine.

2. While we recognize that students cannot do research work which shall be in the nature of original investigation, it is further recommended that they be given by the department in which they take this elective a course in which, whatever other instruction it involves, there shall be instructions in the working up of the literature concerning a specific problem, also directly related to the field of medicine, the carrying out of laboratory work is the same manner as if it were original research, and the presentation of the result is thesis form with a proper bibliography.

In this connection,

A motion prevailed requiring each department to submit to the Dean the number of students that he can accommodate and that the Dean be requested in advising students, to secure a proper distribution among departments.

Minutes read and approved. PJ Harrison, Secy
