This Transcribe UNL project provides access to selected letters from World War II. The letters provide a small glimpse into a soldier's day, stories of young men whose lives were altered considerably by their service in the United States military. Soldiers lived far from home and if they looked up from the paper while writing a letter they experienced a view vastly different from hometowns in Nebraska. Currently represented is Joseph F. Dolezal, Jr., who served as a master sergeant. Dolezal writes to his parents and some letters may include references to his sisters Marie, Ann, Lilian, Frances, and Joann. We plan to add letters written to and from Gerald Sughroue, who served as a member of the 38th Infantry Division. The letters may be those sent from their base overseas, and occasionally, those sent along from folks back home.
