Training Grants

$64,400 from National Science Foundaton for NSF Summer Science Institute under the direction of W. E. Militzer, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. (Continuation)

$17,000 from U. S. Public Health Service for Graduate Training Grant under the direction of Dr. F. L. Dunn of the College of Medicine. (Continuation)

Authorize contract with Office of Naval Research for grant to College of Medicine

It was moved by Regent Elliott, seconded by Regent Welsh, motion put to vote and carried, directing the president and corporation secretary of the Board of Regents shall be authorized to sign in behalf of the Board, Contract No. Nonr-2769 (00) with the Office of Naval Research wherein $3,500 is made available to the College of Medicine for medical education for national disaster.

Authorize contract with Dept. of Army for grant to Dr. R. M. Knapp, Coll. of Dentistry

It was moved by Regent Elliott, seconded by Regent Welsh, motion put to vote and carried, directing that the president and corporation secretary of the Board of Regents shall be authorized to sign in behalf of the Board, Contract No. DA-49-007-MD-1017 with the Department of the Army, Office of the Surgeon General, wherein $2,878 is made available for research to be directed by Dr. R. M. Knapp of the College of Dentistry, research in the field of "Comparison of Routine Roentgenographic Evidence with Histologic Evidence of Caries."

Suggest recognition for workers in campaign for funds for Nebr. Center for Continuing Education

From the Chancellor's office comes the suggestion that some form of recognition be prepared to be provided to those persons who worked in connection with the campaign for funds for the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education, it being clearly understood that many friends of the University gave unstintingly of their time and energy over a period of several months on this campaign.

It was moved by Regent Swanson, seconded by Regent Foote, that a suitable resolution or other form of recognition be prepared for presentation to all workers who engaged in the campaign for funds for the Nebraska Center for Continuing Education.

There being no further business, the Board adjourned.

The Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska met on this day for a special meeting at 2:00 o'clock p.m. in the Administration Building, City Campus.

Regents present: J. G. Elliott, Vice President Richard E. Adkins J. L. Welsh B. N. Greenberg Frank O. Foote

Regents absent: C. E. Swanson, President

University officials present: Messrs. Clifford M. Hardin, Chancellor A. C. Breckenridge, Dean of Faculties Joseph Soshnik, Comptroller John K. Selleck, Corporation Secretary Carl A. Donaldson, Business Manager

Minutes approved

The minutes of the proceedings of the Board at their meeting held January 10, 1959, were approved, copy of the same having been transmitted to the several members of the Board under its order of October 1, 1926.

From the Chancellor's office come reports of resignations, leave of absence, new appointments, adjustments in work and salary and retirement. Money being available for those purposes from former apportionment by the Board, the following actions are taken.

It was moved by Regent Greenberg, seconded by Regent Welsh, motion put to vote and carried, that the following resignations be approved as recommended by the Chancellor's office.

Louis Crompton, Faculty Summer Research Fellowship for Summer, 1959, effective January 15, 1959.

Mark E. Clark, Assistant County Agricultural Extension Agent in Seward County, effective January 31, 1959.

It was moved by Regent Welsh, seconded by Regent Adkins, motion put to vote and carried, that the following leaves of absence be approved as recommended by the chancellor's office.

Raymond C. Russell, District Agricultural Extension Supervisor, leave of absence without pay from February 6, 1959 to February 5, 1960; to accept position with ICA in Bogota, Columbia, South America.

Ted H. Doane, Assistant Extension Animal Husbandman, extension of leave without pay from February 15, 1959 to August 31, 1959.

Accept Ford Foundation Grant to continue educ. television

It was moved by Regent Welsh, seconded by Regent Adkins, motion put to vote and carried, that a grant from The Ford Foundation in the amount of $6,756.00 be accepted. This grant supplements an earlier grant from The Ford Foundation for the period July 1, 1958 to June 30, 1959, in continuation of an experimental project in educational television, as part of The National Program in the Use of Television in the Public Schools.

It was moved by Regent Welsh, seconded by Regent Adkins, motion put to vote and carried, directing the research grants in the sum of $51,643.00 and training grants in the sum of $29,230.00 as reported by the Deputy Research Administrator, Harold E. Wise, under date of January 20, 1959, be accepted.

$12,230 from U. S. Public Health Service for Graduate Psychiatric Training for general practitioners under the direction of Dr. Cecil Wittson of the Nebraska Psychiatric Institute.

$5,000 from E. I. du Pont de Nemours Company to the Department of Chemistry: Postgraduate teaching assistantship, grant-in-aid of fundamental research.

Dept. name change "Dept. of Horticulture and Forestry"

From the Dean of the College of Agriculture, W. V. Lambert, comes a recommendation that the name of the Department of Horticulture be changed to read "Department of Horticulture and Forestry." This recommendation is made in view of the increased interest in forestry in the state and from the further fact that a number of foresters are presently on the staff of the Department of Horticulture being assigned from the United States Department of Agriculture.

It was moved by Regent Greenberg, seconded by Regent Adkins, motion put to vote and carried, directing the Department of Horticulture at the College of Agriculture be renamed to read "Department of Horticulture and Forestry."

Approve application fee for admission of non-resident

From the Chancellor's office comes a recommendation that the University of Nebraska join other schools in the Big Eight Conference in charging an application fee of $10.00 for each non-resident undergraduate applicant for admission to the University of Nebraska. It is recommended that this fee be non-refundable. However, should the applicant actually enroll as an undergraduate student the $10.00 application fee would apply toward payment of fees and tuition. It is further stated the purpose of such a fee is to reduce the cost of processing "no show" applicants.
