[Aug 13 1884?] The chancellor called attention to the necessity of an appropriation of $125.00 for the library, for services of assistance shelving &c., which was referred to the finance committee.

The matter of appropriations for the following purposes was also referred to the finance committee, viz: payment of necessary expenses of prest. Gere to Iowa, fitting up room for [calesthenics], and fitting up room for teacher of fine arts.

$150.00 for outbuildings (temp.)

Regent Burnham moved that $150.00 or so much thereof as may be necessary be appropriated for the building of out-buildings and that the secretary and chancellor be authorized to cause temporary out-buildings to be constructed, which motion prevailed.

$15. for room for calesthenics by chancellor $15 for art room

Regent Burnham moved that the sum of $15. be appropriate to put in repair a room for teacher of fine arts, if necessary, to be expended under the directions of the chancellor.

$13.47 to pay exp. [chr.?] ex. com. Gere. to Iowa.

Regent Holmes of the fiance committee moved that the sum of $13.47 be appropriated to pay expenses of chairman of executive committee in visiting prof. Bessey in Iowa per account rendered, which motion prevailed.

$125.00 for library

Regent Holmes of the finance committee also moved that the sum of $125.00 be appropriated for the library, $90. of the same for assistance for the ensuing six months and the remainder for shelving and bureau as recommended by chancellor, and the secretary authorized to issue certificates accordingly, which motion also prevailed.

$500. for farm (contingent.)

Regent Burnham moved that $500 be appropriated out of any funds available, to be expended under the direction of the chancellor, in payment of expenses of the farm. Which motion prevailed.

On motion the board then took a recess until 8p.m.s.t.

[Aug 22, 1884]

After regress. Lincoln, Neb'r. August 22nd, 1884 The board of regents met at 8 o'clock p.m. pursuant to adjournment, with the same members present as at the afternoon session. The minutes of the preceeding meeting were read and approved.

John Green Elected Janitor &c.

The secretary presented additional applictions filled for the janitorship, and the president of the board presented the application of Mr. John Green for the same place.

$900.

Regent Holmes moved that the application of Mr. John Green be accepted and that he be elected janitor at a salary of $900 per annum, to take charge of and do all work connected with the building and grounds, to take effect Sept. 1st. 1884 which motion prevailed.

$9.50 to Sewell

Regent Holmes of the finance committee reported recommending the payment of the bill of Thos. Sewell for the sun of $9.50 and that the secretary be directed to issue certificate accordingly, which recommendation was adopted on motion.

$25. for Geo'l Department

Regent Holmes moved that the sum of $25 or so much thereof as may be necessary be appopriated for the purchase of supplies for the geological department as recommended in the communication of Prof. Hicks, and that the secretary issue the neessary certificate therefor, which motion prevailed.

Seating of Medical Students

Regent Mallalieu moved that the medical students be entitled to seats at lectures in the order of their matriculation by the registar, which motion also prevailed.

$50. for Advertis'g

Regent Burnham moved that the sum of $50 be appropriated for advertising the university, to be expended under the direction of the chancellor, and the secretary to issue certificates therefor, which motion prevailed.

Buckners Degree Recommitted to Chancellor.

Regent Mallalieu moved that the matter of issuing diploma to Elijah Buckner be recommitted to the chancellor for further investigaton and that he be requested to procure the disputed credential, ascertain the names of signers, their whereabouts, and comunicate with them if possible, and report the results of further investigation to the board, which motion was adopted.

Vancamp Accepted. -lege, which on motion was received and accepted.

Drs. Livingstone & Mencer Elected to Chair of Surgery &c.

Regent Holmes moved that Dr. R. R. Livingstone of Plattsmouth, Neb. be elected to fill the chair of principles & practice of surgery and that Dr. S. D. Mencer of Omaha be elected to fill the chair of clinical surgery in the medical college of this university, each without compensation from the state except the payment of actual expenses incurred in the discharge of their duties, which motion prevailed.

Mansfelde's Appliction Indefinitelu Postponed.

Regent Holmes moved that the application of Dr. A. S. V. Mansfelde for election to the chair of pathology & histiology in the medical college of this university be indefinitely postponed, which motion also prevailed.

Resignation of Prof. Grube

The secretary read the following: Lincoln, Neb. Aug. 22nd, 1884. To the board of regents, University of Nebraska, gentlemen: I beg you to accept my resignation of the post which I have held for several year in the University of Nebraska as Professor of Modern Languags, to take effect on the 1st day of January 1885, and oblige respectfully, yours faithfully, F. W. Grube.

Accepted.

Care of J. S. Dales Sec. On motion the resignation of Prof. Grube was received and accepted on the terms named therein.

Leave of Absence to Prof. Grube.

The following resolution was the adopted: Resolved that Prof. F. W. Grube of the chair of Modern Language be granted a leave of absence until January 1st 1885.

Detail of Dudley Asked for Dec. 1st. 1884

Regent Holmes moved, that the former request by this board to the war department (dec.1883) for the detail of an army officer to take charge of the military department in this university, be renewed to the war department, and that Lieut. E. S. Dudley be named as the choice of the board for such detail, the same to take effect December 1st 1884, which motion also prevailed.

Latin School Tutor &c. to be Employed by Chancellor

Regent Holmes moved that the chancellor be authorize to employ the necessary assistance in the Latin school, at salaries no to exceed $1,000. per annum, which motion also prevailed.

On motion the Board then adjourned to meet on Thursday August 26, 1884 (?) at 3 o'clock P. M. at the city of Omaha, Nebraska.

Final adjournment

Omaha, Neb. August 28th 1884.

On this day at the city of Omaha, seing the time and place to which the board of regents adjourned their meeting at Lincoln on the 23rd, inst. and there being now no quorum present, it is ordered by the president and the members present that the secretary enter of record an adjournment of said board.

Lincoln, Neb. December 15th., 1884 The board of regents of the University of Nebraska, met at the chancellor's office in the university building, at 2 o'clock p.m. in regular session, pursuant to the provision of the by-laws. Present: Regents Gere, Burnham, Hiatt, Hull and Mallalieu, absent regent E. P. Holmes. The minutes of the last proceeding meeting were read and approved.

Secretary's Report, Townley's Report, Claims &c. Referred

The secretary read his report of certificates drawn upon the university fund since the last meeting, and presented accompanying vouchers: bills filled for audit at the present session: also a report of the military panying claim for expenses of the department: also a bill presented by the hesperian student printing company, all of which were received and referred to the finance committee. A communication was read by the secretary from the registar, Miss Smith, and referred to the chancellor.

Bond of Secretary Approved and Filed

The official bond of the secretary elect J. S. Dales, ws presented, approved by the president of the board and ordered filed.

Communications Referred.

The secretary read communications from he medical feaculty, relating to the instruction in the chair of surgery, salaries &c. Also communications from doctors Wayman and Lowery, relating to the medical department all of which were received and referred to the committee on course of study. The secretary read a report from Lieut. E. S. Dudley, relating to the arms &c. for the use of the military department, which was received and referred to the finance committee. The secretary read reports presented of the work for the past year in various departments, which were received and ordeed filed: these being in connection with the chancellor's report.

Communications from Mencer & Col. Med. Association Referred

The secretary also read a communication from Dr. Mencer relating to instruction in clinical surgery, also a communication from the Eclectic Medical Association, relating to the employment of Dr. E. C. Guild, all of which were received and reffered to the committee on course of study.
