On motion it was ordered that the matter of finding books and periodicals, for library referred to in the report of the Librarian we deferred for want of funds.
C.N. Little Elected Associate Prof. of Civ. Eng. -Leave of Absence.
On motion it was ordered that Charles N. Little be and is hereby elected associate professor of Civil Engineering, with leave of absence for one year, in accordance with the recommindation of the faculty.
Regent Gene came in at this time ad assured his duties as president of the board.
Librarians Report Laid Over.
The university and library committee reported back without recommendation, to the board the report and recommendations of the Librarian: Regent Hiatt moved that the same be laid over, which motion prevailed.
Salary of Hicks.
Regent Burnham moved that the salary of Professor Elect L. E. Hicks, be fixed at $1800 per annum, which motion prevailed.
Relating to Detail of Military Officer. Chancellors Instructions Sc.
On the motion of the following resolution was adopted: Resolved: that the chancellor be authorized to acknowledge the receipt of orders of the detail of Lieut. E. S. Susley, and at the same time to inform the war department that an officer of the U.S Navy is now in charge of the military department of the university, and asking that the detail of Lieut. Dudley be withheld until such time as the board may make application therefor and that the chancellor be further requested to add to his communication a statement of the facts respecting this matter.
$15. to U. Orchestra.
Lieut. Townley reported upon the bill of University orchestra referred to him, recommending the allowance of $15.00 in full payment of the claim, which report was on motion received and adopted.
A request from the young ladies attending the university, that the board make provision for calesthenic exercises, was received and referred to the committee on course of study.
Mc. Millan Elected Academic Dean.
On motion the board then procceeded to the election of deans for the ensuing year. Regent Hull moved that in view of the communication of Prof. Hitchcock, expressing a willingness to be relieved of the duties of dean, that Prof. Geo. Mc.Millan be elected Dean of the Academic Faculty for the ensuing year, which motion prevailed. 15

Relating to Buckner Diploma for [sc.?]
Chancellor to investigate [sc.?]
Regent Mull moved, that the matter of issuing diploma to Elijah Buckner [of?] referred to the Chancellor to ascertain the truth as to his former credentials, and if found that he knowingly holds such fraudulent credential, that he be excluded from further attendance in the medical college: and that if he found innocent of fraud, that he be permitted to attend and complete the course and that a diploma from this University be withheld until the facts be ascertained: which motion prevailed.
Mitchell elected medical dean.
Regent Hull moved that A.R. Mitchell M.D. be elected dean of the medical faculty for the ensuing year, which motion prevailed.
On motion the following resolution was adopted:
Resolution to ex-dean Mitchcock.
Resolved: that the thanks of this board be and are hereby tendered to prof. H.E. Mitchcock for his long and faithful services as dean of the academic faculty as well as his earnest and zealous work while acting chancellor of this University.

On motion the report of the committee was received and adopted.
Thompsons and [Culbertsons?] bills tabled.
Regent Hiatt moved that the bills of professors Thompson and [Culbertson?], for expenses in attending farmers instutuets be laid on the table, which motion prevailed.
Relating to ex-prof Augney and microscopes.
Regent Hiatt moved that the secretary be directed to communicate with ex-prof. Samuel Augney and demand of him a definite report of his doings in reference to purchase of microscopes, committeed to him last year, which motion prevailed.
On motion the board took a recess until 8 o'clock p.m.

Regent Mallalieu moved that the president of the board be rquested to ascertain from all means available, the condition of the department of modern languages and the competency of the professor in that department and report to the board at the next meeting and suggest the resignition of the [?] if thought desirable, which motion prevailed.
H.W. Caldwell retained as inst. sc.
Regent Mallalieu moved that Mr. H.W. Caldwell be elected instructor in history for the ensuing year at a salary of $900. Per [annum?], which motion also prevailed.
Tutor Culver retained for 1st. team sc.
Mrs. Dearborn retained sc.
Regent Mallalieu moved that Mrs. Dearborn be retained as the instructor in elocution for the ensuing year at a salary of $800. Which motion also prevailed.

Latin School instructors for sc. deferred.
Regent Mallalieu moved that the matter of choosing instructors for the Latin school be deferred until the next meeting of the board, which motion also prevailed.
Relating to Sarah A. Moore, artist.
Regent Mallalieu moved that the action in selecting Sarah A. Moore as teacher of painting sc. be confirmed, she to act without compensation from the state, which motion also prevailed.
Miss Smith elected registrar sc. salary $1400.
Regent mallalieu moved that Miss Ellen Smith be elected registrar of the University, and of all of its departments, with the duties usual to such an officer and to perform such other duties as may be assigned to hereby the chancellor, at a salary of $1400. per annum, which motion also prevailed.
A.E. Blount elected Prof. of Agr.
Regent Mallalieu moved that Prof. A.E. Blount of [?] Collins, col. be elected to the chain of agriculture, at a salary of $2,000. per annum, which motion also prevailed.
C.E. Bessy elecected prof. of Botany and Horticulture sc.
Regent Hull moved that prof. C.E. Bessey of the Iowa Agricultural college, be elected to the chair of botany and horticulture at a salary of $1800. per annum, which motion also prevailed.
Will O. Jones Janitor 3 months
On motion, Mr. Will O. Jones was elected janitor of the university building, to have charge of the building and grounds for the period of three months from this date, at a salary of $50. per month, which motion prevailed.
Announcements of sections of med. coll - expense. Supervision.
Regent Hiatt moved that te different sections of the medical college be authorized to issue annoincements for the ensuing year, if they so desire, without expense to the university, under the supervision of the chancellor, which motion also pervailed.
Regent Mallalieu offered the following:
General Appropriations - how drawn.
Resolved: That all appropriations, expecting those made for the purchase of some specific thin, be drawn only to the parties entitled there to, directly, by the secretary which resolution prevailed.
Chancellor to assign rooms sc.
Also the following: resolved that the matter of assigning rooms to the members of the faculties and instructors, be and the same is hereby placed under the control of the chancellor, which resolution prevailed. On motion the board adjourned subject to the call of the president.

The board of regents of the University of Nebraska, met at 2 o'clock p.m. at the chancellors office, pursuant to the terms of the order of adjournment in June last and upon the following call by the president:
Lincoln, Neb, Aug. 12/84. Pursuant to the order of the board of regents made at their last adjournment in June 1884, a meeting of said board is hereby called for Friday Aug. 22D. '84 at the usual place at 2 o'clock p.m. C.H. Gere President. Which said notice was forwarded to each member of the board.
Present, regents L. Burnham, C.H. Gere, E.P. Holmes and J.T. Mallalieu. Absent, regents J.M. Hiatt & M.J. Hull.
The minutes of the last preceeding meeting were read and approved.
Secretary's verbal report, band room out-houses &c.
The secretary made a verbal report of matters referred to him at the June session cost of fitting up room for band $53.00 rebuilding out-houses & c., reporting also bills filed, bids for coal received, and applications for chairs and janitorship.
Coal bids opened Whitebreast Coal Co. awarded contract at $10.30
The secretary, being directed by the president, open the bids received for furnishing coal the University for the coming winter, and the bid of A.C. Cass for the Whitebreast Coal Company being the lowest bid regent Burnham moved that the bid of said Whitebreast Coal Co. for furnishing coal delivered at $10.30 per ton be accepted and the secretary instructed to procure the mecessary amount of fuel, which motion prevailed.
Prof. Bessey salary of &c. instructor &c. to be procured by him.
Regent Burnham moved that Prof. elect C.E. Bessey, be employed as professor of botany and horticulture at a salary of $2,000. Per annum and an addition sum. of $500. for purposed extra services for the first year, and that we be authorized to procure an instructor in agriculture for the University, at a salary not to exceed $1,200. Which motion prevailed.
A communication was received from supt. E.P. Savage and referred to the finance committee.
