Dear Professor Bessey, I see by the American Geologist that Prof. Hicks has left the University of Nebraska and the chair of Geology is vacant. Would there be any chance for me? I have been in the U. S. Geological Survey for the past two years and a half and taught geology in connection with Botany and natural history for two years in Miami University. You have considerable to say in the matter, doubtless, and a word from you would be of service. I enclose you a formal application for the

position, which you may present to the proper authorities in case there is any chance for me. My work in the Geological Survey is too much of a routine to allow me opportunity for original work and so I am seeking professorial life again. Yours very truly Joseph F James. U.S. Geol.
