UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA.
CHANCELLORS OFFICE,
Lincoln, Neb., Oct. 20, 1891
Dear Professor Bessey:-
I have been consulting with Dr. Billings, Prof. Ingorsoll, Prof. Taylor and others concerning a short course of practical lectures, which shall have for its object the [?] of information rather than education to those already [?] in [farming?], or about to engage in agriculture in the near future. It seems desirable that such a course should be made up of perhaps 35 or 40 lectures, to be given at the rate of three or four lectures per day and to extend over a period of two weeks. The [time?] should be probably the last half of Feburary, which will enable us to complete our [proposed farmers' inatitutes?], advertising the course at those meetings.
I shall wish you to deliver five of those lectures. They should be short, say fifty minutes; very simple, as free as possiblefrom technaicalities; and should go directly to the point with information that will be of practical daily advantage to thse who are listening to you. Kindly inform me at your earliest convenience whether you will be able to do this work, and if so what your subjects will be.
I wish to announce the course and print the program at the very earliest date possible, and feel that every days delay now makes the success of the undertaking more uncertain.
Very cordially,
James H. Canfield
Chancellor
