Prof. Chas. E. Bessey London Eng.

Dr Sir:

I have the honor to inform you that at a meeting of the Board of Regents of the University held July 10th to 19th 1888 (Adjourned June session) you were elected Dean of the Academic Faculty for the current year, actual service as such to begin Sept. 1/88, to which date present Dean is requested to continue service.

congratulations. I shall be pleased to hear that you accept the appointment with its responsibilities, beleiving as I candidly do, that it is for the best interest of the University at present.

I should also like to be informed as to your sojourn abroad &whether in the light of recent events, you are likely to return earlier than was contemplated at the outset. In the capacity of acting chancellor, I shall have need to discuss measures with you as early as possible & I doubt not the same is true of all those having to do with the work of the University.

Prof. Hicks was appointed Dean of the Industrial Faculty.

Please present regards of Mrs. D. and myself to Mrs. Bessey.

Cambridge, March. 17.

Dear Prof. Bessey,

Have you any corrections and additons to the enclosed listed of works on [U.L.?] Fungi for 1887 as in the part already issued? I suppose now that the mails will run regularly. The storm was not particularly bad in Boston and the horse cars and trains ran as usual but we have had no southern or western mail until today for four days in consequence of the blockade in New York and Western Massachusetts. FORESTRY DIVISION.

Washington, D.C., Nov. 26, 1888.

Prof. C. E. Bessey,

Lincoln, Nebraska.

Dear Sir: -

In rendering your kind assistance offered in preparing an exhibit of rate of growth, will you please keep in mind, that the sections should be taken from the butt-end and every 3 feet up to 12 feet, making in all 5 sections for each tree. They should be cut 2 inches thick and on the North side, as they were situated in the tree, marked on each with an N., each section wrapped in paper separately, and sent under the franks, of which enclosed a number. If many sections are sent from one place, it may be advisable to send the whole lot to the same address by freight, the freight to be paid here.

The sections will be prepared here, by steaming, planing, reenforcing annual rings, and varnishing and mounting at their respective heights on two side strips.

The exhibit will be credited to the contributors, and a comparative account will be published in the report; a short note giving the position of the tree as to soil surroundings, etc, and its history, if known, should accompany each.

Advices so far received from contributors promise to make this a most instructive exhibit.

Please forward sections as soon as feasible, as their preparation will require some time.

Respectfully, yours,
