Your favor of the 25 ult: is received and I send a meager account of our trees and shrubs.
Trees 1 Elm 2 Hack berry 3 Box Elder 4 Willow - (Long leaved.) 1 think 5 Ash 6 & 7 There are a few oaks and cedars in some localities
Shrubs Buffalo Berry. Willow Plum
Bushes Amorpha Snowberry Missouri Currant
In many respects the Hackberry resembles the elm, in shape of leaf & general appearance. It has a dark red drupe.
The shrub that. I is called Buffalo-Berry has a small oblong acuminate leaf (I think). pubesent, & whitish green- like dusty miller. It is a thorny shrub and bears

a small light red berry, which is sessile & clustered along the branches. It is very sour. It is ab't 1/2 as large as a pear I have made a beautiful jelly from it.
There are many varieties of wild plums, some of which are very fine.
I wish it might be so arranged that you could visit this part of the state and address our Institute the coming summer.
I do not know yet what funds will be at my disposal, certainly not as large a sum as I should like.
