Prof C. E. Bessey Dear Sir.
I expect to make the proposed trip to the PHilippine Islands this summer – leaving here about the first of July and going by way of San Francisco prepaid to Hon-Kong – shall be gone 15 months from home.
When you were here in 85 you spoke of going yourself. If you should desire to do so I shall be pleased to do all in my power to make your trip pleasant and profitable. A party of four students is already preparing to go with me.
Yours truly J. B. Steere

Dear Sir,
It is a pleasure as well as an assistance to me for me to send you specimens. I hope to send you many but I never want you to return me the postage. I am sending them more for my own benefit than yours and therefore I gladly pay all expenses. Circumstances prevented me from making my trip west as intended, therefore I would like very much to master the flowers of this country this summer. I am a novice in botany with a constantly increasing love for the study. I will take it as one of the greatest pleasures of the season if you will vising Long Pine and I will gladly assist you all I can. If you will draft me a line a few days before you start I will

Dear Sir,
We are expecting to have a very nice time during the Chautauqua assembly here. There will be half-fare excursons from Norfolk during the wk. beginning with July 21. A prominent farmer living near here has an extensive collection of the grasses of this county. I believe it would be highly appreciated by the farmers of this country and a very taking thing if we could secure you to give us a lecture on botany. I would like very much to know if you could come for that purpose and I will see the manager of the assembly as soon as he comes, which will be in a few days. our teacher's institute begins

here the 8th of Aug. I wish you were here when the sand cherries are ripe. I believe it can be made very valuable by cultivation. A gentleman near here hsa some growing about four feet high, the usual height being 1 1/2 ft. I believe everything grows within ten miles of here than grows anywhere within 300 miles. I curious find has been made in a nighboring creek, it appears to be a partially petrified bone and is a semi-circle, about seven ft. long and seven inches in diameter to within ten inches of the end when it decreases to a point. The prominent farmer I spoke of says he knows where to find every variety that grows in the state and that he will gladly take you around several days.
In Haste, Yours, C. M. Stevans.
