The word "Garfield" is handwritten at top of this letter. I believe the writer of that note was thinking this letter was during Garfield's 6 mth term as President of U.S. (1871). Actually, this note was written 2 weeks after President Grover Cleveland was sworn into his first term in 1885. Lamont had started as Cleveland's personal secretary, when Cleveland became Governor of New York State in 1883, and followed Cleveland after his move to the White House in 1885.
